about

Thoughts and Prayers is The Chad Sipes Stereo’s first release since 2019’s DIG EP. This time around, they enlisted Dave Wheeler (Limousine Beach) as producer, looking to tap into the harder edge of their sound. Referencing Weezer’s Pinkerton, Wheeler sought to maximize the bands classic “2 guitars, bass and drums” lineup. His vision for the band was fully realized, seamlessly merging the band's melodic sound with grunge and polish.

The lyrical content of Thoughts and Prayers focuses on America’s obsession with pills, and the problems and promises that occur as a result. On the ten songs, Chad Sipes tackles this issue from all angles; whether it’s over-medicating our children at a young age, the joy of feeling better, or the pain of addiction. Thoughts and Prayers never once wags a finger, but focuses on a stark reality: for better or worse, at some point in our lives, we all end up on pills.

Musically, the seasoned rock quartet is completely dialed in. Loud guitars and soaring vocal hooks guide the listener through the intense highs and lows of this complicated issue. The album kicks off with the verse-chorus-verse grunge of “Every Single Kid”, an explosive track that sets up the story and prepares the listener for what is coming.

Subsequent tracks such as “New Prescription”, “Therapy”, and “Ground Score” are fist-pumping anthems that would please fans of Wire or Green Day. The power-pop of “Pill for That” celebrates the fact that yes, there is a pill for that. Gloomy lyrics coupled with sunny melodies and major chords create a dichotomy that one may expect from The Flaming Lips.

The album’s centerpiece, “Bruise on You” is hopeful yet melancholy, and finds the album’s character sitting on the edge of their bed wondering how far is too far. The middle of the song highlights the Thoughts and Prayers theme, a “Lean on Me” type progression that weaves in and out of every other song on the album, tying the 10 songs together.

The titular “Thoughts and Prayers” closes the album as perhaps the most anthemic track on the album. The listener is standing by as the character’s addiction leaves their body for the final time, and can at long last find peace. Happy endings are relative.
